2021 is the best vintage that I have experienced in my career, a perfect year for flowering, fruit set and ripening, wines are perfumed and have beautiful colour density. It encouraged me to do something special.
I tasted through all the wines and put together a blend of the best parcels to make a tiny batch of Cabernet, Shiraz and a small amount of Malbec.
The Cabernet is Coonawarra, and the Shiraz and Malbec from Wrattonbully.
Matured in french oak then bottled into magnum - this wine is special and deserved a label that reflects my life to this point so it had to be a piece of Indigenous art I loved, in this case artist Corban Clause Williams. Corban is a Manyjilyjarra artist from the Pilbara region who paints with Martumili Artists.
In 2022 to celebrate my 50th birthday my daughter and I hiked the Larapinta Trail through the Tyurrentye landscape of the Arrernte people. The annual Desert Mob exhibition opened the night we returned to Alice Springs. Corban paints his grandfathers' country - Kaalpa, Well 23, Canning Stock Route. It was serendipity to meet him and realise he painted my favourite painting. I contacted him later to see if I could use it for this wine and he was happy to be involved, I have paid him for the right to use it.
To me a larger bottle was required to do justice to the painting, I hope you love it as much as I do.
I am adopted, with Aboriginal heritage, I feel fortunate to be recognised and included in such a special cultural heritage, my daughter has further links through her father to Bunuba country in the Kimberley of WA. We live on Pinchunga land surrounded by Buandig country. I encourage the wine community to celebrate our love of the land by recognising the 65,000 years of cultural connection to country we have in this amazing country prior to colonisation.
