Occasionally a pair of great vintages come together - I believe along with many other local winemakers that 2021 and 2022 are our modern 1990/1991 or 1998/1999.
To celebrate 2021 I released the first 'Special Blend' magnum - with the label from the very talented Corban Clause-Williams. The 2022 is the second vintage and there hasn't been once since, the blend is Shiraz dominant, perfumed and spicy. So a Shiraz, Cabernet, Malbec blend.
I'm really excited to release this wine.
The Shiraz and Malbec are from Wrattonbully (Marditjali), the Cabernet is Coonawarra (Pinechunga).
Matured in french oak then bottled into magnum - this wine is special and deserved a label that reflects my life as a winemaker, celebrating the country I am so lucky to work with. artwork by Aboriginal artist Corban Clause Williams. Corban is a Manyjilyjarra artist from the Pilbara region who paints with Martumili Artists.
To celebrate my 50th birthday in 2022 my daughter and I hiked the Larapinta Trail through the Tyurrentye landscape of the Arrernte people. The annual Desert Mob exhibition opened the night we returned to Alice Springs. Corban often paints his grandfathers' country - Kaalpa, Well 23, Canning Stock Route. It was serendipity to meet him and realise he painted my favourite painting. I contacted him later to see if I could use it for this wine and he was happy to be involved, I have paid him for the right to use it.
To me a larger bottle does justice to the painting, I hope you love it as much as I do.
I am adopted and have Aboriginal heritage, I have been fortunate to be identified and included in some very special gatherings in my life, my daughter has further links through her father to Bunuba country in the Kimberley of WA. We live on Pinchunga land surrounded by Buandig country. I encourage the wine community to celebrate our love of the land by recognising the 65,000 years of cultural connection to country we have in this amazing country prior to colonisation.
